Assignment
Design a contest involving an art object at the entrance of the bicycle parking facility on Oosterdokseiland, next to the Central Library in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Design
The aim of the design was to encourage people to park their bikes in the Central Library’s underground parking facility. The area was a chaotic sight with bikes parked everywhere.

To get people to realize that there is an ‘underworld’ where they can store their bikes, a design was developed consisting of a red and white sounding rod that moves along with the lift as it travels up and down. The colours and the movement attract attention and arouse people’s curiosity. The sounding rod creates a link between above and below. Moreover, it serves as a beacon (illuminated at night) for the entrance to the underground bicycle parking facility.
