Design for a viewing point in a residential area on a lake in Slochteren, The Netherlands.
The dikes on the Wadden Sea are characteristic features of the landscape of Groningen, the northernmost province of the Netherlands. From a dike, you can look across the magnificent Wadden Region. The elevated location provides an exciting panoramic view of the flat, wide-open landscape.
The main focus of the design is a dike positioned as a viewing point further inland, on the periphery of Slochteren. The initial experience of looking over the area from a higher vantage point has been reproduced in a new location. At first, the small dike obstructs the view of the large lake behind it, but once you’ve climbed on the dike you’ll be rewarded with an amazing panorama. This archetypical dike, complete with steps, bench and flagpole, is also a great place for locals to meet for a chat and for children to play.
